NELIS(Next Leaders’ Initiative for Sustainability)is a local2global platform of and for young sustainability leaders (main target: below the age of 40). These are the people we call next generation leaders.

By connecting, inspiring and empowering our members, we aim to provide a multitude of opportunity transfers, thus allowing NELIS to become a supportive community and/or a livelihood platform.

In our work, we focus on developing skills of transformative leadership and on enabling bypass innovation for sustainability to help pave the way towards our long term, grand vision – One World in Harmony.

The world is in dire need of better leadership. This is why we need millions of NextGen leaders who can act for the well-being of societies, our planet, and future generations. Next Leaders’ Initiative for Sustainability -NELIS- is a network of locally-rooted and globally interconnected change-makers dedicated to building a more sustainable and thriving world. Our flagship program, One Million Leaders, aims to inspire, connect, and empower one million leaders and social innovators across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa by 2030. Through our four regional Fellowship Programs, we offer our members across the global south action-oriented skills in transformative leadership, team building, and project implementation. We channel funding and growth opportunities for our fellows and their impact-oriented initiatives through strategic alliances with different organizations and stakeholders. Our learning journey is composed of three main phases: (1) A primary in-depth online training; (2) a leadership challenge where fellows are required to share and replicate their learning processes within their territories; (3) and a community project, where fellows are expected to integrate their learning outputs into their ongoing initiatives or begin a new one . Our OML App, a crucial tool within the OML program, allows subscribers to learn about real-life sustainability, be inspired by the OML fellows’ journeys, and offer a concrete channel to support their empowerment. Nowadays, it is crucial to raise awareness among people, companies, and governments to take environmental and sustainability commitments seriously, and how we raise such awareness and encourage actions is automatically becoming essential as well. On that point, the usual “depository education” model -transmission of information from an authority figure to people who have to be filled with knowledge- is creating more and more resistance, as the “trainees” feel excluded and not taken into consideration in their views and expectations. To solve this problem, a new educative approach around sustainability is being implemented: Radical Pedagogy and care culture. Ilaria Brambilla, from Palermo, Italy, is an activist specializing in environmental communication and education for children. She gives environmental education classes in a deprived area of Palermo and volunteers with ArcI Porco Rosso, a collective laboratory of ideas with a solid political antiracist background, where she organizes activities around sustainability for teenagers with a migratory background. To do so, she uses a radical pedagogy that creates a safe environment, with stimuli, collaboration, and encouragement, where no one feels excluded. Her objective is simple but powerful: to convey a fundamental message to her -we must take care of the planet- through kindness, empathy, vulnerability, and cooperation. The current world of sustainability can be a frustrating one. While some global companies struggle to innovate around sustainability, local entrepreneurs with innovative solutions need help reaching the right customers and growing. The links between both sides still need to be stronger, which sadly prevents businesses from accessing a broader set of potential innovations at lower costs, locally, and with more speed to shift towards sustainability. Shravan Shankar, an impact entrepreneur from Chennai, India, tackled this issue by promoting win-win relationships between companies and local entrepreneurs. Shravan creates a win-win process through his company AtWorks -an entrepreneurship support platform- giving companies access to the innovations they need to shift while giving startups the market-access opportunities they need to grow and scale.
