Akimura & Partners is a construction service company with headquarters in Omi-Hachiman, Shiga Prefectures. With a focus on sustainability, the company created one of Japan’s first large scale ecovillages and, in collaboration with civil society, has set up non-profit organizations to solve both local and global problems.
Akimura & Partners cover part of personnel and other costs involved in setting up NELIS and organizing the Global Gathering 2015. Staff from a non-profit spin-off from Akimura & Partners (involved in the creation of an ecovillage in Omi-Hachiman) participate in the NELIS secretariat and are in charge of key secretariat functions.
The Taneya Group is a confectionery manufacturer established 1872 in Omi-Hachiman (One group company, Taneya, manufactures and sells Japanese sweets, the other, Club Harie, baumkuchen and other Western style sweets). Fourth generation CEO, Masahito Yamamoto, is co-founder of NELIS and strongly committed to both the local community and environmental preservation.

The Goi Peace Foundation is dedicated to promoting world peace, transcending all boundaries of race, religion, or politics, with a belief that peace begins in the mind of each individual.
The first ideas for NELIS took shape in 2005 at an international conference, “Creating a New Civilization”, hosted by the Goi Peace Foundation in Tokyo (Mikhael Gorbachev, Ervin Laszlo and many other prominent speakers participated). NELIS co-founder, Peter David, was also one of the speakers at this conference. Future collaboration will focus on linking youth forums and other international events hosted by the Goi Peace Foundation and NELIS activities.
Schumacher College is an international centre for nature-based education, personal transformation and collective action. The college provides short courses and postgraduate study with the leading thinkers, practitioners and activists of our time.
Head of the economics program at Schumacher College, Jonathan Dawson, joined the NELIS Global Gatherings in both 2015 and 2017 to pursue the possibility of future collaboration between NELIS and Schumacher College.
Since openings its doors to the public in 1991, thousands of passionate and engaged learners from all over the world have participated in Schumacher College programs. A key focus of future collaboration will be how/whether this global alumni network could be linked meaningfully to NELIS’ network of next generation leaders.
