Description:
When I was a boy I studied primary school in a school in my hometown Zipaquirá. One day they took us to visit “El Matadero”. That’s what they called it, or commonly known as “Frigorífico”. They wanted to show us where the meat and sometimes the milk we ate came from. The moment we entered this place, I noticed the deplorable treatment given to these living beings, cows piled up next to each other with no room to move, waiting for their turn to be slaughtered, and those who were luckier had machines attached to their udders to quickly and automatically extract the milk. You could see the suffering on their faces. One day I came back from one of my trips to Argentina and while walking through my village I came across this place again. Suddenly I saw some cows loose on a hill nearby, they even looked as if they had escaped. One of them climbed up to the top of the hill to have a look. I had the opportunity to capture that moment, and every time I look back at this photograph it is impossible to ignore that feeling of freedom.
