Santiago Navarrete

Ph.D. candidate in Latin and Hispanoamerican Literature and Cultures program within The Romance Languages and Literature Department at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana (USA). In his research scope, he is working on a contribution for the volume Environmental Violence that will be published by Cambridge University Press the following year.

He is researching the relationship between extractive economies and the Latin American cultural production of the early 20th century. In 2020 he wrote an analytical review for the journal Contracorriente commenting on Hector Hoyos’ book: Things with a History. In this book, Hoyos proposes that literary language registers different stages of the process of massive production. Santiago’s analysis consists in understanding how certain practices created false barriers between what is cultural and what is natural, influencing the notion that nature is inferior to humans and, therefore, that humans are entitled to extract resources from it indiscriminately. He would like to share the proposal where according to Hoyos, literary language is the realm where the fracture between humans and nature (on which extractivism depends) can be transcended.

One Million Leaders Photo Exhibit 2022

This exhibit, which is paving the way toward the NELIS Arts4Sustainability Fest, aims to:

  • Showcase the diversity of stories and angles we can capture through a camera lens when we dare to counter-imagine the dystopia;
  • Financially support the OML Programs running worldwide (OMLA -Africa-; OMLATAM -Latinamerica-; OMLAS -Asia-; OML-MENA -the Middle East & North Africa-), and;
  • Support local doers, dreamers, their communities, and initiatives working towards “one world in harmony.”

Through the different NELIS projects, the NELIS members and staff work to create a platform for connection and change, a source of hope and inspiration, and an enabler force of empowerment and communication.

Through this phygital exhibit, we want to bring together local2global realities of active resistance that challenge our social, cultural, economic, environmental, and imagination crises and open thresholds to foresee the shape of what can become possible.
