In the last NELIS Global Summit (2018) Safia Minney was one of the guest speakers (she is a British social entrepreneur and author, a pioneer in sustainable and Fair Trade fashion). At one point she said that one SDG was missing, an 18th goal not included in the list, and that this was media for sustainability; a joint effort for assertively and strategically communicate all the previous SDGs.

The sole concept of ‘sustainable development’ can be quite problematic, in fact, and this is already a question of communication. What terms are we using and how are we using them? To what extent green-washing is simply a new marketing and communication strategy applied by traditional companies? How can we reach a critical mass of rather apathetic decision-makers and policymakers who don’t really care about sustainability? How can we trigger more empathetic responses in the public at large?

Long story short, I believe that communication is an essential dimension of the changes we want to accomplish and, in general terms, it hasn’t been considered properly yet on many levels.
