EVERY AVAILABLE SPACE: A Model for Growing Food Sustainably In Urban Cities

ORGANIC PLANET EVERY AVAILABLE SPACE ECO HUB UPDATE

BRIEF OVERVIEW

Every Available Space Eco Hub is a food, nutrition and environmental solution that trains, mentors and support urban households to take their front yards and backyards – every available space –  to create edible landscapes where they grow food in a way that support family health, community and the environment.

The idea behind Eco Hub is to deploy sustainable gardening models to urban households whereby families and institutions work with nature to create food systems that promote and conserve the wellbeing of the environment while also guaranteeing food security.

This is achieved through the use inexpensive and innovative gardening technologies that maximize small spaces and conserve water to grow vegetables and fruits in sustainable and nature-respecting ways.

UPDATE

In March 2020, we received a grant of three thousand dollars ($3000) from NELIS to support our work to deploy 5 Eco Hubs around our city. Shortly after receiving the grant award, there was a total lockdown in my country, precisely on March 28, 2020,due to the COVID19 pandemic. The lockdown limited our reach but we were eventually able to set up 4 Eco Hubs, 3 in the city and one in a rural community.

We deployed innovative technologies such as Bag Garden, an inexpensive but high yielding food security technology that maximizes land and water use. With bag garden it is possible for households to grow 70 vegetables on 1.5sqm space with minimal water use that guarantees continuous supply all year round.

We deployed Bamboo Bed Garden, a simple urban space gardening solution that uses bamboo, a low cost, readily available and low maintenance eco-friendly material for growing food in small spaces.

We also deployed Mini Bag Garden, a solution that focuses on using recycled nylon material that poses serious environmental threat as medium to grow food in places with concrete floors where nothing can be grown.

In addition, we advocate for healthy food production and train urban dwellers on how to grow some of what they eat.

These initiatives were possible by the support of NELIS.
